Owners, and husband and wife duo, Jim and Paula Hennessey have worked on the water for over 22 years; Jim as a captain on motor yachts all over the world and Paula as a dive master, guide and yacht crew from the Galapagos Islands and the Caribbean to Papua New Guinea. How to Choose the Proper Kayak Paddle Length

Kayak PaddleKayak paddles come in a wide variety of materials, blade shapes and lengths, each of which contributes to the overall performance of the paddle. Ideally, kayak paddles are lightweight, durable and comfortable to use, although length is an important consideration you’ll need to keep in mind. By selecting a kayak paddle with the proper length, you’ll become less fatigued as you paddle and the chances of straining yourself are lowered dramatically.

So, what is the best length for a paddle? Most adults do well with a paddle between 220 and 240 cm in length if they’re using recreational kayaks or ocean kayaks. Wider kayaks require longer paddles, and paddlers who are using an inflatable kayak may want a paddle around 250 cm. Whitewater kayakers, on the other hand, require more powerful strokes so they should select a much shorter paddle around 205 cm long.
